In Hannes Meyer’s Pockets

In response to Rem Koolhaas’ theme for the Venice Biennale 2014 ‘Fundamentals,’ which set out to survey the absorption of modernity in the last 100 years and the meaning of national identity in that process, our project builds on a ‘program’ outlined for such modernity by architect Hannes Meyer (1889- 1954) in the beginning of last century. Hannes Meyer gives a definition of the building project that is not only based on the relationship between function and aesth

etics but on its direct relationship with human existence. For him, the function diagram and the economic program became the determining principles of modern building project, and the task of creating categories became operative to define fundamental aspects of life from which the inhabitants could take part in a constant definition and redefinition of self. The program Hannes Meyer wrote down for the dwelling consisted of 12 fundamental points. We believe he named these p

oints not to limit the scope of architecture and living habits, but to demarcate fundamental generators of life. Hannes Meyer´s 12 points reflect a possibility of giving form to the uprooted life of the modern subject by industrialization.
